CobraHead Short Handle FAQ
What's so great about the CobraHead® Weeder & Cultivator?
It's probably the best all around small garden tool available. It has a range of uses that will make it indispensable to most gardeners. It weeds, it digs, it scalps, it cultivates, and it does all these jobs exceptionally well. Don't believe us? Check our reviews!
What makes CobraHead® different from other tools that look almost the same?
There are lots of tools that have a similar blade head shape to CobraHead®, but they are not the same. The CobraHead blade is thin, and wears to knife-like edge. Other similar tools are flat and thicker along the cutting edge. While this may seem to be a small difference, it makes a huge difference in soil and weed cutting ability. The CobraHead cuts through all soils easily. What weeds it cannot pull out it chops off below the soil.
There are similar weeders that do have a sharp blade. The most popular tools are made under various names such as New England Style or Cape Cod Style weeder. These tools have a blade that is sharp on one edge only and can only be used for right hand weeding. The CobraHead out-performs these tools in its weeding capability, it can be used right-handed or left-handed, and it has many other uses besides weeding.
What makes the CobraHead® a "precision" weeder?
The relatively narrow blade head and the pointed tip let the CobraHead work as though its blade were a steel fingernail®. You can get right next to delicate plants and grab the weed and pull it out.
Is the CobraHead® effective on all weeds?
While we doubt there is such a thing as a universal weeder, the CobraHead appears to be as close as you can get. We find it the best tool for grasses of all types. It does a great job on low-lying weeds such as purslane and spurge. It is great on dandelions and tap-rooted weeds and because of its scalping ability, even the weeds that can't be pulled out can be cut off quite deeply underground.
How do you "grab" weeds with the CobraHead®?
Over the years we've found that everyone who uses this tool will develop their own style, but we find that if you push the blade into the ground just beyond the root and crown of the weed and pull the tool towards me, it pulls the whole weed loose. Usually you can pull dandelions and similar rooted weeds out in a single motion, with minimal disturbance to plants around the weed.
What about cultivation? Why would I want to use a single bladed tool as a cultivator?
The unique blade shape of the CobraHead has proven itself for years as an extremely efficient soil-cutting tool. What it may lose in width covered with a single pass is more than offset by the ease with which it cuts soil. You don't kill yourself trying to break hard soil. I find its ability to break up soil and pull up weed roots at the same time to be the best way to cultivate my beds.
What else does CobraHead® do well?
We have used it in so many ways! It has been used as a transplanter, almost never use a trowel anymore. We have used it as a seeder to either dig a small hole or make a furrow line. We use it to de-thatch very weedy areas that need to be cleaned up. We use it as an edger both in the garden and along walkways. We find and hear from our customers new uses all the time!
I'm a flower gardener, does the CobraHead® work for me?
Flower gardeners will find this tool invaluable. Its ability to be extremely precise makes it ideal. It is a great bulb transplanter. It is great in rock gardens.
Is CobraHead® the only garden tool I need?
We don't think so. Most gardeners will tell you that they use a lot of tools. However, you certainly could garden exclusively with the CobraHead. Certain jobs would just take you longer, that's all. However, we would proudly say that if you could only have one tool, this would be it!
You say it's great. What if I don't like it?
We will give you one year from the time of purchase to make up your mind. If you don't find the CobraHead to be a useful and an exceptionally well made tool, return it and we will refund your purchase costs including original shipping costs (USA only).
The CobraHead also has a full one year warranty against manufacturer defects. If defective, return it within the year together with your receipt and we will send you another or refund your money.
CobraHead Long Handle FAQ
What's unique about the CobraHead® Long Handle Weeder and Cultivator?
The CobraHead Long Handle was developed to help gardeners do a wide variety of tasks while standing. It was specifically designed with older gardeners in mind, but all gardeners will find it useful for weeding and cultivating. Its range of uses makes it indispensable to most gardeners. The unique blade shape and angle make it an extremely effective weed pulling device, but it is also very useful as a scalping tool and as a cultivator.
The tool looks like an old single-tined cultivating hoe. What's different?
Single tined cultivating hoes have been around for a long time, but they are often made with a flat edged blade, which makes them useless in all but well-cultivated soil. There are some sharp edged single-tined hoes out there, but the blade curve does not allow them to be used effectively as a scalping tool. We've positioned the blade on the long handle so it is perpendicular to the handle, making it an extremely effective tool for scalping or cutting off weeds at ground level.
Can I do everything with the CobraHead® Long Handle that I can do with the CobraHead® Weeder & Cultivator short handled tool?
Unfortunately, no. They are two different tools with different purposes. The short tool requires the user to be on their hands and knees, or bent over, while the long tool is designed to be used while standing erect. The short tool can be pushed deeply into the ground to help extract tap roots and large clumped roots. You cannot obtain the same leverage with the long tool. However, the long tool is extremely effective for weeding maintenance and shallow stand up cultivating. It also has a great reach advantage to grab weeds that would normally be out of range.
What else does the CobraHead® Long Handle do well?
Use it as a cultivator. We say that the CobraHead Long Handle will do a better job of cultivating than traditional three or five tined cultivators. The single blade cuts hard soil more easily and with far less resistance than a wide hoe or a multi-tined tool.
It is also an extremely precise weeding tool, allowing the user to pull weeds away from valuable plants without damage to the good plant.
Market growers and gardeners using drip irrigation systems will find the tool exceptionally useful for scalping weeds growing up around hose lines. It is not necessary to lift the lines to safely cut away weeds while standing.
The tool is excellent for weeding in tightly spaced crops such as onions, where most hoes are too wide to be safely effective.
What if I'm not happy with my purchase?
CobraHead tools have a one year warranty. If you don't find the CobraHead Long Handle Weeder and Cultivator to be a useful and well made tool, return it and we will refund your purchase costs including original shipping costs (USA only).
The CobraHead also has a full one year warranty against manufacturer defects. If defective, return it within the year together with your receipt and we will send you another or refund your money.
